London Hyperbaric

The Therapy Provider currently responsible for the provision of the Hyperbaric Services at James Paget University Hospital is the James Paget University Hospital NHS Trust. LHWHC currently owns the chamber and provides all the technical hyperbaric service to the trust.

The British Hyperbaric Association Category 1 Hyperbaric Facility at James Paget University Hospital is run in a Private-Public-Partnership arrangement between James Paget University Hospital NHS-Trust and London Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Centres Ltd., which has been providing Hyperbaric oxygen services to the NHS since 2001.

Clinical responsibility for the facility is in the hands of NHS-physicians and nursing staff employed directly by the Trust. The Unit’s Medical Director is a full-time NHS-Consultant in Anaesthetics and Hyperbaric Medicine.

The Hyperbaric facility is located within the main hospital building and has direct access to all the support services of a large District General Hospital.

The previous Seagull 60 Treatment Chamber was replaced by a new walk-in Haux Starmed 2000mm Hyperbaric Therapy Chamber capable of seating eight patients and an attendant. The chamber is fitted with three types of oxygen delivery systems; Hood tents, BIBS-masks and a ventilator for intubated ICU patients. Work was completed in December 2007.

The order for a brand new 8 patient Clinical Hyperbaric Therapy Chamber was placed with the German Manufacturer Haux Life Support GmbH on the 2nd June 2007.

10th September 2007 – Phil Sayers inspects the new chamber during its construction at the manufacturer’s pressure vessel manufacturing plant in Cuxhaven, northern Germany.

26th September 2007 – The completed pressure vessel passes its hydrostatic pressure test to 8.25 bar.

1st October 2007 – The chamber leaves the paint workshop and is transported to Karlsdorf in Southern Germany to be fitted out.

22nd November 2007 – After five and a half months construction time the finished Therapy chamber undergoes factory acceptance trials at Haux Life Support.

18th December 2007 – The new chamber is lifted in by a 300t crane supplied by the company Ainscough Ltd.

18th December 2007 – The new chamber is manoeuvred into position.

18th December 2007 – At 2.30pm the chamber is sitting on its final resting place inside the new hyperbaric facility.
